Help: Matrix basics and safety

First wave draft. Clear practical guidance for everyday users.

Wave 1
Quick start
  1. Install a Matrix client such as Element or FluffyChat.
  2. Set homeserver to matrix.saymsg.com.
  3. Sign in with your SayMsg account credentials.
  4. Share your Matrix ID @username:saymsg.com to start chats.

Matrix basics

Identity

Your stable identity is Matrix ID: @username:saymsg.com. It works across clients and servers.

Federation

You can message people on other Matrix servers, for example @alice:matrix.org. Same protocol, different homeserver.

Direct messages

Start a DM by entering exact Matrix ID of another user. IDs are case-sensitive in many clients, so copy carefully.

Rooms

Rooms are group chats with their own members, settings and history. Public rooms can be discovered and joined by alias.

Spaces and rooms

A Space is an organizer for multiple rooms. Think of it as a folder for your team or community.

  • Use spaces to group rooms by topic, project, or department.
  • Each room keeps its own permissions and message history.
  • Invite people to the space, then add them to relevant rooms.
  • Room aliases look like @support:saymsg.com.

Login and finding users

SayMsg website: sign in with your account username and password.

Matrix client (Element/FluffyChat): set homeserver matrix.saymsg.com and use your SayMsg credentials. If the client asks for Matrix ID, use @username:saymsg.com.

  1. Open new chat or new direct message.
  2. Enter the full Matrix ID (example: @bob:saymsg.com).
  3. Select the exact match and send first message.

Check homeserver value first: matrix.saymsg.com. Then verify username/password and retry. If needed, reset password via Reset Password.

Encryption basics

  • Private chats and rooms can use end-to-end encryption.
  • Encryption keys live in your client apps, not in plain text on the server.
  • If your client offers secure backup for message keys, enable it.
  • When adding a new device, verify sessions in client security settings.

Safety

Account safety
  • Use a strong unique password.
  • Keep TOTP active and store recovery codes offline.
  • Do not share verification codes in chats.

File uploads

The maximum size of a single file you can upload depends on your plan. You can find the current limits on the Pricing page.

After plan upgrades: Matrix clients cache upload limits. If you upgrade your plan or an admin changes your limits, you may need to re-login, hard reload, or restart your Matrix client before the new upload limit becomes visible.
